According to The Filipino Times, in his acceptance speech at this year’s Philippine Sportswriters Association awards night, where he was named Athlete of the Year, Carlos took the opportunity to acknowledge San Jose’s support.
"To my beautiful partner, Chloe, thank you for taking care of my mental health," he said.
San Jose responded to his acknowledgment, stating: "I feel so loved and cared for."
"I’m always thankful and grateful that he always acknowledges the things we do together," she added. "Obviously, it’s his achievement, but I’m just overwhelmed that he’s always thanking me."
At 24, Carlos is recognized as the most decorated Filipino gymnast in history, per Forbes.
The gymnast and his mother Angelica Poquiz Yulo have been embroiled in a highly publicized dispute that began when Carlos posted a TikTok video on Aug. 6, 2024, accusing Angelica of mishandling his finances, misleading him about gymnastics incentives, and falsely accusing his girlfriend of financial exploitation.
The next day, Angelica held a press conference to express regret and explain her actions, which she said were motivated by concerns for Carlos’ financial security.
"The money was given to me," she explained at the press conference, as reported by The New York Post. "As a mother, I was worried that my child might face financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name."
Despite a promise from former Filipino politician and businessman Chavit Singson to gift Carlos and his family 5 million Philippine pesos (US$85,052) if they reconcile, the family conflict remains unresolved.
San Jose, born in the Philippines and raised in Australia, is 22 years old and currently works as a model and online influencer.
The couple’s relationship began when San Jose messaged Carlos on X, formerly known as Twitter, in April 2020.
